CNN’s PR department tweeted: “CNN has terminated our agreement with Kathy Griffin to appear on our New Year’s Eve program,”
The gruesome photos were taken in a shoot with celebrity photographer Tyler Shields, who is known for work depicting violence.
The comic has since apologised, writing alongside a video posted to Instagram: “I am sorry. I went too far. I was wrong.”
“I beg for your forgiveness.”
Ms Griffin added that since she is a comedian, “I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far.
The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it.”
The President himself has condemned the tweet, saying: “Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself.
“My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”
The image caused a social media storm, and even Ms Griffin’s long-time co-host of the New Year’s Eve programme Mr Cooper said he was “appalled”.
He tweeted: “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in.
“It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.”
